Apartment Moves in Melbourne: What Happens on Moving Day and How to Prepare

Moving out of an apartment isn't the same as moving out of a house. You've got a building manager to deal with, a lift that needs booking, a loading dock with a height limit, and often a strict window for using the lift. Miss any of those and the day gets stressful fast.
At Boss Removals & Logistics, we do apartment moves all the time, and the jobs that run smoothly are almost always the ones where a bit of prep happened beforehand. Here's what usually goes on when our crew turns up at an apartment building.
We Ring You Before We Get There
On the morning of the move, we call about 30 minutes before we arrive.
That call matters more for apartments than houses. It gives you time to let the building manager or concierge know we're close and check that the lift is set up for your booking. Building managers are flat out in the mornings with deliveries, residents and maintenance, so a heads-up from you helps them help us.
If your building needs a lift booking, get that sorted before moving day. We can't start loading until it's confirmed.
Checking the Loading Dock
First thing on arrival, we look at the loading area, and the big thing we check is the height clearance.
Plenty of Melbourne apartment buildings have underground docks with low entry points. It's easy to forget about this when you're booking a move, and a truck that doesn't fit is a real problem. So we check the clearance properly and don't just assume we'll squeeze in.
Your Lift Booking Sets the Clock
Most apartment buildings have a service or removalist lift that residents book ahead of time. Say yours is booked from 10 am to 1 pm. That's the window we've got to get everything down, and we can't stretch it, because someone else may have the lift straight after you.
Buildings also have their own deliveries and activity going on during the day, so we keep things moving.
Walking Through with the Building Manager
Before we move any furniture, we like to go through the building with the manager or concierge. We look at the path from your apartment to the lift, then from the lift to the loading dock.
Apartment buildings often have low ceilings, narrow corridors and tight corners. Knowing about these before we start means we can plan for them and avoid surprises halfway through.
Sprinklers and Other Overhead Fixtures
Sprinklers are something our crew pay close attention to. They sit low in a lot of buildings, and big items like wardrobes, tall cabinets and mattresses can easily catch one if you're not careful.
Once we know where the sprinklers and other low spots are, we can decide how to carry each piece. We want to get your furniture out without damaging it or the building.
Dollies and Trolleys
When we start moving, we don't hand-carry everything one piece at a time. We use dollies and trolleys wherever they make sense. Boxes and smaller items can be stacked together on a trolley, and larger or heavier furniture gets moved on its own.
It means fewer trips between the apartment and the truck, which matters a lot when the lift is on a timer.
Loading the Truck
When the furniture gets to the loading dock, we load it into the truck with a plan. Heavy, solid items go where they're supported. Fragile things get extra protection. We keep going until everything is in and secured for the drive.
Working Inside the Building's Time Limit
This is the biggest difference between apartment moves and a lot of house moves. The building sets the time, and if your lift is booked for two or three hours, that's what we work within.
That's why the prep matters. Knowing the truck clearance, how the building access works, what the lift arrangement is and which route we'll take saves a lot of time once we start carrying.
More Than Just Lifting
An apartment move is about more than carrying heavy things. There's talking to you and the building manager, checking truck access, understanding the lift rules, watching for sprinklers, using the right gear and loading the truck well.
At Boss Removals & Logistics, that's how we approach every apartment move. In a busy building, good planning is just as important as good lifting.
