How Do Removalists Stack a Moving Truck?

The truth is, we don’t just load. We stack. There’s a big difference. Random stacking leads to damage, wasted space, and a second trip. Professional stacking protects your furniture and makes the move faster and safer.

Here is exactly how our team loads a typical household move in Melbourne.

1. We Set Up The Truck Properly First

Before a single item goes in, we get the truck ready. We park for the safest access, open the hydraulic tailgate and lay a thick furniture blanket over it. That blanket stops scratches when we slide heavy items like fridges and lounges up, and it keeps dust and grit off your mattress.

At the same time, we lay out everything we’ll need: heavy-duty furniture blankets, dollies, ratchet straps, shrink wrap, and bubble wrap for fragile pieces. Having it all ready means we aren’t dropping your furniture to go looking for a strap.

2. Mattresses and Tall Flat Items Go In First

We always start with items that can stand upright and create walls.

That’s usually mattresses, bed bases, and large flat panels. Mattresses are perfect for this. They take up vertical space, which most people waste, and they create a soft, padded wall to protect everything else. We stand them against the sides or at the front of the truck to build a solid foundation for the rest of the load.

The order changes depending on your home and our truck size, but the principle is the same — create a stable, protected base first.

3. Your TV and TV Unit Get Special Treatment

This is where a lot of DIY moves go wrong. A TV is not just another flat box.

For TV units, we put a blanket underneath and wrap the whole unit. It stops surface scratches and corner dings.

For the TV itself, the original box is always the safest option. If you don’t have it, we don’t just wrap it in a blanket and hope for the best. We place it between two soft, padded items — usually between two mattresses — and strap it so there is zero pressure on the screen. No weight ever goes on top of it. We use cushions around the edges to stop any movement. One bump in the road with pressure on the screen and it’s gone. We take that seriously.

4. How We Load Sofas and Lounges

Lounges are the biggest space-takers in the truck, so placement matters.

First, we fully wrap them in furniture blankets, and shrink wrap where needed to keep the fabric clean and protected. Then we look at the shape. Some L-shaped lounges need to be separated, some two and three-seaters can be stood on end to save space.

We never just pile lounges on top of each other. We check the frame, the weight, and how it will sit during the drive. Once it’s in position, we run straps around it, with blankets under the straps so they don’t leave marks. It’s tight enough to stop it moving when we brake, but not so tight that it crushes the cushions.

It’s a balance between using all the space and protecting the shape of your furniture.

5. Boxes Fill The Gaps — But Not Randomly

Only after the big furniture is in do we start with boxes. This is like a game of Tetris, but with weight limits. Heavy boxes — books, kitchen items — always go low and directly on the truck floor or on top of strong, flat furniture. Light boxes and fragile boxes go high. We never put a heavy box on top of a flat-pack or a glass cabinet.

We fill the cavities around your furniture to stop movement, but we never force a box into a gap where it will put pressure on something. Every box is placed where it supports the load, not weakens it.

6. Fridges, Washing Machines and Dryers Are Last

Whitegoods are heavy, expensive, and awkward. They need to be wrapped and handled on their own. We wrap each appliance in blankets to avoid scratches in the truck. Your fridge needs to be completely empty and defrosted. We secure the doors and shelves so nothing swings open mid-transit. For washing machines, we make sure the drum is secured as per the manufacturer’s instructions.

They are loaded with a dolly and team lift, and placed in a position where their weight helps keep the truck balanced, usually in the middle, over the axles, and always kept upright. A fridge laid on its side can cause serious compressor damage.

7. The Final Strap-Down and Safety Check

This is the most important part. Before we close the door, the team does a full walk-through. We check:
